Why Become a Student Leader?

Student leadership is very important to Chemeketa’s college life. Student leader positions provide financial aid to help meet educational expenses, help college staff do important work, provide you with valuable work experience and the opportunity to develop strong leadership skills.

Student leaders may also participate in special activities

  • Accessibility Services Support Technician

    Provides customer service at our AIM (Accessible Information Management) Help Desk, which includes checking in appointments for testing and assisting students to navigate the AIM database. May assist in the creation of alternate format materials and checking out adaptive equipment. Will work directly with students, e.g. as a classroom or lab aide, while maintaining a high level of confidentiality. Attends meetings and training as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

    Students must maintain a 2.75 term GPA and be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours each term.

  • Advising Peer Assistants

    Advising Peer Assistants are student leaders who represent the Advising and First-Year Programs department as well as your fellow peers at Chemeketa Community College. Working as a student leader you will support students by engaging with prospective, new, and current students on a daily basis. This is an essential role to the Advising Department.

    Advising Peer Assistants are students who have experience and knowledge of the campus, navigating the website, using the my.chemeketa student portal, and registering for classes. 

    This position gives you the opportunity to develop leadership skills working directly with students and staff. In this position, you will have an opportunity to gain valuable experience in networking, communication, teamwork, customer service,  and public relations.

  • Associated Students of Chemeketa (ASC)

    The Associated Students of Chemeketa (ASC) is a group of student leaders who represent their fellow peers at Chemeketa. This is a great opportunity for you to develop multiple job related skills, including leadership skills, time management skills, team work skills, computer skills, and build your resume for future jobs or scholarships. ASC’s main tasks are 

    • Represent students at Chemeketa
    • Work closely with students to help improve their well-being at Chemeketa
    • Receive student concerns and take them to the appropriate bodies of authorities
    • Manage tasks and projects as approved by the ASC Student Council

    Students must maintain a term GPA of 2.75 and successfully complete 12 credits each term.

    Most ASC openings happen during spring term, but you are encouraged to apply any time of year.

  • Apprenticeship Assistant

    The Apprenticeship Department at Chemeketa is located on the Salem campus in Building 33. Our student assistants help with a variety of office and recruitment tasks. These include interacting with visitors, answering questions about our programs, assisting with events, helping students register, and performing general office tasks like filing, photocopying, and answering phone calls.

    It is helpful for our assistants to have some knowledge of Registered Apprenticeship and construction. A willingness to learn about our programs and speak to groups is a big plus.

    Our Apprenticeship Assistants have experience and knowledge of the campus, navigating the website, using the my.chemeketa.edu portal, and registering for classes.

    We look for people with strong communication skills, customer service experience, and positive attitudes. You must be able to work with diverse populations.

    Students in this position must maintain a 2.75 GPA and be enrolled in classes.

  • CAMP Tutor

    CAMP Tutors must complete Level I Tutor Training within the first two terms, and must demonstrate proficiency in subject area. Tutors work with minimum supervision. Participate in weekly meetings with Tutor Supervisor and participate in tutor training activities. Maintain weekly tutor logs. Meet weekly with each assigned student. Assist in monitoring students’ success. Attend leadership conferences/workshops as assigned. Do student follow up via phone calls or email. Provide individual educational assistance to students. Demonstrate problem-solving skills. Tutors may perform various clerical tasks and other duties as assigned.

    Tutors must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 throughout the academic year and successfully complete 12 credits each term.

  • CAP Assistants

    The CAP (College Access Programs) Assistants perform receptionist duties and provide support for all College Access Programs such as CAMP, TRIO, TRIO Pre-college, and the Chemeketa Completion Program (CCP). This team will assist with the Resource Center's front desk and the main office's front desk by welcoming students, staff, and the community in a friendly, helpful, and approachable manner and providing department information.

    Resource Center front desk duties include 

    • Welcome and check-in students
    • Monitor the Resource Center
    • Maintain computers, lab and resource center security and keep work areas clean
    • Answer phones or assist staff/students with computer equipment and/or software use
    • Answer general student questions
    • Other duties as assigned

    Main office front desk duties include 

    • Welcome and greet clients (students, staff, and the community)
    • Provide CAP information and reply to phone, email and in person inquiries
    • Schedule appointments

  • CAREER SERVICES STUDENT LEADER

    The Career Services Student Assistant will provide support to the Career Services unit. The Student Assistant will be responsible for responding to inquiries by email, phone, or in-person from students, employers and faculty/staff. The Student Assistant will help identify and publicize job opportunities for students and former students. They will also help create department flyers, work with Student Life, and update and monitor Chemeketa Career Link.   • CAP Tutor

  • College Credit Now Student Ambassador

    The RPED student ambassadors will provide support to the RPED/College Credit Now department. Student ambassadors would help support rural high school students, families and the community to learn about dual credit opportunities. Student ambassadors will be responsible for responding to inquiries by email, phone, or in-person from students, parents, community and faculty/staff.   • CAP Mentor

    This position allows the opportunity to develop leadership skills working directly with students and staff in the TRIO/CCP programs. Mentors assist in our TRIO/CCP classes, giving them a direct connection to the students in their cohort. They help students with assignments, give feedback and encouragement, monitor academic success, follow up on instructor alerts, connect students with additional supports, etc. 

    They must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 throughout the academic year. Mentors work 5-12 hours a week on a regular basis, and on certain occasions up to 20 on special projects if the student schedule allows it (not required to work more than 12).

  • Design OP

    Design OP is looking for Visual Communications students interested in putting into practice skills they are learning in the program through graphic design and/or interactive media.

    Design OP provides hands-on opportunities which helps students be successful in their program as well as in the graphic design industries as business leaders.

    • Work with a team of graphic designers
    • Critique and consult with each other
    • Project management processes and skills
    • Build a working relationship with vendors
    • Design for various medias
    • Consult with clients and assist them with their design needs

  • Intercultural Assistants

  • Multicultural Student Services (MSS)

    The MSS team members are responsible for

    • Maintaining the Multicultural Center facilities
    • Coordinating ongoing cultural awareness projects
    • Providing support for the cultural student clubs
    • MSS team plans events
    • Promoting upcoming multicultural events by creating flyers and posters and maintaining a designated display case and bulletin board

  • Peer Advisors for Veteran Education

    The role of the Peer Advisor is to support the student veteran as they transition to campus life.  Peer Advisors will be existing students who have experience and knowledge of the campus. The Peer Advisor will act within an agreed range of confidentiality and will ensure they have the best interest of the student veteran in mind at all times.

    Roles and Responsibilities

    • Complete initial online training modules
    • Coordinate times to call or meet with student veterans
    • Provide informal support to student veterans to increase awareness of the resources available
    • Refer student veterans to university, federal and community resources as needed
    • Complete all interaction and outreach logs on a regular basis
    • Increase campus awareness of the PAVE program and specific needs of student veterans

    Qualifications

    • Good academic standing (0 or above GPA)

    • Good interpersonal, communication and problem solving skills
    • Insight about transition challenges

  • Public Safety Office Assistants
    • Works various shift hours based on scheduling Monday through Friday
    • Provides customer service information on security, safety, first aid, facility usage, card access/key control, parking and traffic management and other college functions to visitors, students, staff and faculty
    • Provides clerical support for Public Safety Officers
    • Inputs data with high degree of accuracy, including parking permits, incident reports and key requests into established computer programs in a prescribed manner

  • Polk Center Recruitment and Retention Student Leaders

    These positions assist in the overall retention and recruitment efforts at Polk Center. They focus on the planning, publicizing and coordination of various events at the Polk Center, including student clubs, cultural events and community service events. They also assist with high school recruitment events throughout the school year, held on and off campus. This includes giving campus tours, speaking on student panels and staffing college fairs. Additionally, one of the Recruitment and Retention Student Leaders will be an active member of the Associated Students of Chemeketa (ASC), which is the student government for Chemeketa Community College. The ASC Rep will attend the ASC weekly meetings at the Salem campus and report on the events and happenings at Polk. They will also work to strengthen the collaboration between the Salem and Polk Center

  • STEM Scholar Peer Mentor Position

    STEM Scholars Peer Mentors participate in the STEM Scholars program by mentoring a cohort of first year STEM students attending Chemeketa. Mentors assist in supporting students’ college success by interacting with mentees through the STEM Scholar activities, meeting with mentees and communicating with mentees in other ways. Mentors assist in supporting students’ college success in person, via Zoom, via email, phone or texts. They also assist with workshops and other STEM Scholar student activities as needed. In addition, they may work on special projects related to the STEM Scholars program. Mentors work 5-10 hours a week throughout the academic year. In addition, some limited summer work may be available.

  • Student Support Multimedia Designer

    The Resources Navigator is looking for a student who cares deeply about their community and is ready to join the Student Resources team as a Student Support Multimedia Designer.

    The Student Support Multimedia Designer works on retention projects utilizing skills learned through the Visual Communications Program as well as on-the-job such as graphic design and/or interactive media development, small business practices, consultations with clients, prioritizing requests, project management, team collaboration, and critiquing. Some of the Student Support Multimedia Designer duties include but are not limited to:

    • Providing services to Counseling and Student Support Services. No outside organizations. 
    • Creating graphic design services such as posters, flyers, booklets, banners, flat screens, t-shirts, illustrations, and any other marketing materials. 
    • Providing additional creative services such as photography, branding campaigns, Google sites, and social media management.

    Students are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits.

  • Student Ambassadors

    Student Ambassadors work at the recruitment office at the Salem campus. Their main job is to assist with recruitment efforts of the college. Some of their other roles and responsabilities are to:

    • Answer general questions about the admissions process, classes and college life
    • Conducts campus tours to prospective students, their families and members of the public
    • Assist prospective and newly admitted students with the enrollment process
    • Maintain prospective student records and database
    • Perform related tasks as assigned
    • Communicate and work effectively with students, staff, and the public from diverse cultural, social, economic, and educational backgrounds
    • Use appropriate technology to accomplish job functions

  • Student Support Navigator

    We’re looking for students who care deeply about their community to join our team as Student Support Navigators. 

    The Student Support Navigators will provide support primarily for the Resources Navigator. The Resources Navigator is responsible for connecting students to on and off-campus resources such as SNAP, STEP, food pantry, etc. This student role is crucial because peer support creates an environment of trust, which is vital to addressing the stigma that comes with seeking resources.

    Student Support Navigators may be asked to support Counseling and Student Support Services as needed. These programs work closely with the Resources Navigator to connect students with additional services.

    Resource Navigator support duties include:

    • Answering general student/community questions
    • Scheduling
    • Outreach supplies and inventory tracking
    • Completing initial intake survey with students
    • Social media management
    • Providing general resource information to in-person, phone, and email inquiries
    • Assisting with special projects such as tabling at events
    • Event set-up
    • Other duties as assigned

    Students are required to maintain a 2.5 GPA, and be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credits.

  • Student Life Assistants

    Student Life Assistants work at the office of College Access and Student Life. Their main job consists of connecting with current and returning Chemeketa students via phone, text or email helping the navigate resources at Chemeketa. They are also in charge of the food pantry, campus postings, and other clerical tasks for the office.

    Interested students should:

    • Be in their second year of college at Chemeketa Community College for the 2020-2021 academic year.
    • Maintain a 2.75 G.P. A or higher throughout the academic year and successfully complete 12 credits each term and pass their classes with a C or better. No Ds or Fs accepted while employed.

  • Student Success Mentors

    Student Success Mentors work at the Student Success Center by helping in different campaigns that relate to helping students navigate campus resources and procedures. They monitor student success in person, via email and text messages, connecting with students at different stages of the term. They also assist with the on-going workshops and orientation for students that happen in the center. Lastly, they maintain coverage of the front desk, welcome area of the center. They may also assist in other projects or activities around the college, helping other departments in times of heavy work that relates to the success of the student body in general. 

    Mentors work 10-12 hours a week on a regular basis, and on certain occasions up to 20 on special projects if the student schedule allows it (not required to work more than 12). 

    Interested students should:

    • Be in their second year of college
    • Maintain a 2.75 G.P.A or higher throughout the academic term and successfully complete 12 credits each term and pass their classes with a C or better. No Ds or Fs accepted while employed.

  • Student Bookstore Leader

    Student Bookstore Leaders work in the Bookstore at the Salem campus. Working as a student leader you will assist students, staff, faculty and the public with purchases. This position gives you the opportunity to develop leadership skills as well as enhance your experiences in customer service and public relations.

    This is an essential role at the bookstore as you will often be the first face seen when entering. Some of the other roles and responsibilities are as follows:

    • Establish a student leadership role both on the campus and within the Bookstore.
    • Answer general questions in regards to campus information, merchandise, required course materials and bus information.
    • Assist fellow students, staff, faculty and the public with course material selection and general merchandise.
    • Maintain the Bookstore sales floor to be clean and inviting to all.
    • Perform relative tasks as assigned.
    • Communicate and work effectively with students, staff and the public from diverse cultural, social, economic and educational backgrounds.
    • Use appropriate technology to accomplish job functions.
    • Work independently, with minimum supervision.

  • Wine Studies Assistant and Student Leader

    The Wine Studies Assistant and Student Leader performs a variety of duties including:

    • Assistance with various wine related events, including tasting room events, wine judging events, and annual barrel tasting event.
    • Assistance with student recruiting events and activities (held both on and off campus).
    • Providing tours of the Northwest Wine Studies Center.
    • Participating as student representative on the Wine Studies Advisory Committee (1 meeting/term).
    • Winery, vineyard, and tasting room assistance as needed.

    Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision, be able to lift 40lbs. and must be able to work some weekends and evenings. Must obtain OLCC servers permit upon hire.

    The Woodburn Center is looking for leaders within the student population who wish to gain work experience within a wide range of positions.   • Yamhill Valley Recruitment & Retention Student Leaders

    These six positions assist in the overall retention and recruitment efforts at Yamhill Valley Campus. They focus on the planning, publicizing and coordination of various events at the Yamhill Valley Campus, including student clubs, cultural events and community service events. They also assist with high school recruitment events throughout the school year, held on and off campus. This includes giving campus tours, speaking on student panels and staffing college fairs. Additionally, one of the Recruitment and Retention Student Leaders will be an active member of the Associated Students of Chemeketa (ASC), which is the student government for Chemeketa Community College. The ASC Rep will attend the ASC weekly meetings at the Salem campus and report on the events and happenings at YVC. They will also work to strengthen the collaboration between the Salem and Yamhill Valley Campuses.

    Students must maintain a term GPA of 2.75 and successfully complete 12 credits each term.
