Are Distance Learning Courses For Me?

Student Guidelines

Who Should Take Distance Learning Courses?
A person taking distance learning courses needs to be a self-motivated, independent learner. If a student needs to have immediate instructor/classmate response, probably a distance education class would not be a good choice. Anyone who has difficulty getting to campus due to work and family responsibilities or travel restrictions will find DE courses very convenient.

How Do I Get Started?
If you are pursuing a degree or certificate, the first step is to apply for admission to the community college of your choice. The college you chose to “attend” does not have to be the college within your local area. You may enroll in any college within the state. Contact the Administration Office of that college for the admission form; complete it; and return it to the college. If you wish to enroll for an occasional course, it is not necessary to apply for admission to the college. Just contact the college and register for the course.

How Do I Register for Classes?
Methods of registration vary from college to college so be sure to check with the Registration Office of the college where you have applied or that is offering the course in which you are interested.

How Much Do Distance Learning Courses Cost?
Tuition is individually set by each college and will vary between $47-$70 per credit hour, plus any additional fees that may apply. You will be informed of the exact cost when you register for classes.

How Do I Purchase Textbooks And Other Supplies?
Almost all distance learning courses require textbooks. Books can be ordered from the college bookstores using a major credit card. Call the bookstore of the campus you are “attending” for more information.

What Other Services Are Available To Me?
All student services that are available to on-campus students are also accessible by distance learning students. It is advisable to contact a distance learning adviser to make sure the classes you have registered for will apply to your selected program of study. Or, if you haven’t decided what area of study is for you, they will help you chose courses that will apply to any general education requirements. Most distance learning courses qualify for financial aid and veterans’ benefits. Contact the college’s Financial Aid office for more information.

Can I Obtain A Degree Through Distance Learning?
The Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer (AAOT) degree is available through distance learning. Three of the community colleges (Lane, Portland, and Chemeketa) have the degree available totally through their college. The other colleges work together to provide the courses necessary to complete the program. Course requirements for the AAOT vary from college to college so be sure to check with the college where you are registered. Chemeketa Community College also offers the Associate of Applied Science and Associate of General Studies Degrees by distance learning.

How Do I Begin A Distance Learning Course?
Many distance learning courses begin with an orientation. This is an opportunity for the instructor to discuss the course objects and requirements, and to distribute and discuss the course syllabus. The syllabus will provide all the information necessary for successfully completing the course. If you can’t attend the orientation, call the instructor and make arrangements for obtaining this information.

Each student will want to establish a home institution. This will be your primary contact for financial aid, counseling, course information, as well as the granting of your AAOT degree. Each colleges' degree requirements may be viewed by clicking here.
